Tuesday's Top Picks

Yeah, that's right, I changed it.  I'm not making any promises that these new little titles are going to stick...  I couldn't think of any tips.  I've decided to share a couple of my picks for holiday gift giving, this is the runners edition.  I have a bunch of runner friends which I think is totally crazy since I just started running a year ago.  But I guess that's how it works, we gravitate towards those with similar interests.  Plus I've been known to drag my friends kicking and screaming over to the dark side...

1. I know I've shown these before but I really love them!  They are pieces of wood that are painted then distressed and have hooks to display running bibs and medals.  And now the seller on etsy is offering a package deal for the holidays!  Seriously, if you're buying for anyone that does any number of races this is a great gift!  Or something you could totally make yourself, but I don't have the patience for all that.
2. These belts are the best!  I got one at the Broad St expo and it's great for holding all your stuff on a short run when you don't need a water belt.  The pockets are made from this stretchy material and they like triple in size so you can fit your phone, camera, etc.
3.  I'm not sure how it works for runners with long hair but I've have serious issues keeping my short hair out of my face when I run.  These B.I.C. bands are great, they do not move!  I've worn them for runs and in spin class with zero adjustments needed.  I think they're basically just pretty fabric on top but the under side is velvet I think.  Anyway, I linked to them on OpenSky if you need an invite just let me know :-)
4. This next item is a lot more expensive then the others but totally worth it.  I use a Garmin 405CX to map my runs and calculate my calories burned based on my heart rate.  I'm sure you're saying, "no one needs a $300 watch for running."  I thought the same thing, I was totally fine running along with the programs on my phone until one day I had gone approximately 8 steps and it said "1 mile complete."  Right then I knew I needed to upgrade, I was just starting to train for Broad St and I wasn't about to waste precious time running further then necessary.  The best part about this model is that while it only has modes for running and biking on the actual watch you can switch the activity once you sync it with your computer.  Meaning, I can wear it to an aerobics class then correct the activity at home so I get an accurate reading on calories burned!

Motivation Monday

I think I've finally got my mojo back!  After a pretty rotten November, which isn't over yet but really there's no way to save it, the scale was still reading 142 on Monday morning after Thanksgiving and I wasn't thrilled.  I now only have 9 weeks until vacation and 12 pounds to lose, not great odds.  I gave myself a pep talk and laid down the law.

I'm back to 1000 calories burned or 1200 calories eaten per day whichever is more.
I have workouts scheduled 5 or 6 days a week through the end of December.  As you can see there are only 3 days during the entire month that I don't have SOMETHING planned...ouch.
I signed up for a cardio contest at my gym, it's called Beat the Christmas Cookies and basically you earn points every time you do certain workouts at the gym to earn prizes.
I'm also going to get my steps, EVERY DAY.  At first I wasn't going to commit to this one, with the weather getting colder it's hard to find places to wander and I feel guilty making people walk with me when the conditions aren't optimal.  But Nicole said that was crazy which I'm taking as an offer to walk with me.  So game on!

a trip to Deptford

After our late night on Friday we both slept in Saturday morning.  I had scheduled us a run but waking up at 9:30 didn't leave enough time before Joe had to be at work.  He got up and out the door while I texted back and forth with Tammy making plans to drive up to Deptford for a visit.  We eventually settled on my coming up around 1pm so I got my butt out of bed.  I made a bowl of oatmeal with sliced banana and peanut butter for breakfast then hopped in the shower.  After putzing around the house a little while it was noon and time to go, I grabbed a smores Luna bar and an apple for the ride and off I went.

I hadn't seen Vic and Tammy in a while so we spent a few hours catching up and snacking on swedish fish.  After we'd compared notes on everything in our lives it was time to get our shop on.  Tammy is the best bargain shopper I've ever met so it's always fun to hit the stores with her.  We started at TJ Maxx and found a few things but nothing fantastic.  Tammy kept saying, don't worry we'll find something better at Marshall's.  I was a little concerned that we were putting too much pressure on Marshall's and it wouldn't live up to the hype.

I was wrong.  The Deptford Marshall's in a wondrous place!  It's about a million times better then the store by me, I couldn't get over how clean and well organized everything was.  It was like shopping in a nice department store but with much lower prices!  We were grabbing things left and right.  Finally we realized we were getting a little out of control and headed for the register before we could do any more damage.
I got a variety of things.  New drinking glasses since we've broken pretty much all of our fancy Mikasa set.  New bath mats because the rose colored towels that I got on black Friday totally didn't work with the burgundy set we had.  A new Calvin Klein coat (size 4!) because all of my jackets from last year are too big.  And a couple of long sleeve t-shirts with Philly sports teams on them so I can represent a little better when Joe tries to make me watch the games on tv.

The rest of my evening wasn't too interesting.  I came home, Joe and I ate Thanksgiving leftovers for dinner and watched tv.  I think we may have visited with Lou & Nicole for a little bit but I'm having a hard time remembering...

Black Friday

I didn't do a very good job of taking pictures during our shopping excursion, probably because I was absolutely exhausted.

We didn't get right in when the doors opened at Target.  They were letting people in about 20 at a time so it took us another 15 minutes or so to actually get inside.  Kelli made a dash for the $265 46" television but Shana and I took our time walking through the clothing section and warming up. Once we acquired a couple of carts we were ready to really shop.  I didn't find much that I had to have,  it seemed like the only really big sales were the tvs.  I picked up a jacket, a sweater, 2 boxes of Luna bars, presents for the cats and couple of other little things before hitting the check out line.  We were pleasantly surprised with the speed of the line, last year we spend close to an hour in line and it wrapped all the way around the store.  This year they wove us through the health & beauty aisles and it worked beautifully.

Our next stop was Old Navy.  They had a lot of great deals, not that I need more clothing...  I picked up a couple of scarves for $1 each, a cozy wrap cardigan, a sherpa lined vest and of course Shana & I got our xmas outfits squared away.  We hopped in line and prepared to wait, the line at Old Navy was torture in comparison to the line at Target.  We waited 45 minutes before hitting the registers.  Now, I am totally fine with this, it's black Friday, lots of people are shopping, there are lines.  However, what gets me are the people that bitch and moan the entire time, complaining that it's hot and they can't believe this.  I wanted to smack this woman a few people behind us, she was miserable the entire 45 minutes.  It was almost enough to crush my black Friday happiness.  Luckily we came upon these hats and that made it all better.
Yes they are children's hats and barely fit our giant heads...
Our only stop after Old Navy was Kohl's and I put a hurting on Kohl's.  I easily spent the most money there and got the most accomplished.  I picked up toys for a few of the little kiddles on my list, a couple of sweaters for myself and a couple of gifts for Joe.  By the time we left Kohl's it was close to 5am and we were ready to call it a day.  I should have probably stopped at Michael's and looked for those last 4 frames but I just didn't have it in me.

I got home and into bed by 5:30am and slept until 9:30 when Joe got up and left for work.  He was kind enough to leave me a french toast bagel with cream cheese for breakfast and I was starving so I scarfed that down then tried to go back to sleep.  I only got about another hour before giving up and declaring myself awake for the day.  I didn't do much that afternoon, a little laundry but mostly I played on Facebook and cleaned out the DVRs.

We had plans to meet friends out for Mark's 35th birthday that night so I made sure to eat something in case I decided to have a drink.  I'm am a big fan of Thanksgiving left overs, that was such a delicious little sandwich but I didn't stop there, once I started eating I couldn't stop.  I also had an apple, a banana with peanut butter and a bunch of candies.
Joe was working until 9pm so I headed out to the bar without him and met up with our friends.  It was a relaxing evening full of laughs.  I stayed away from drinking though, I decided that it wouldn't be smart to drink alcohol when I'd had so little sleep and would have to drive myself home but I did eat some more.  Joe and I split a patty melt and an order of scallops wrapped in bacon.  We headed home a little after midnight and I passed out the minute my head hit the pillow.  I'm pretty bummed that the shopping basically ruined my entire day.  I wish the stores would have stuck with their normal 4am opening, it's actually easier that way.

Happy Thanksgiving!

As you all are fully aware, last Thursday was Thanksgiving and I hope you all had a great day!  Mine was pretty packed and I feel like I got a lot accomplished considering it's the holiday that most people spend sitting on their butts eating all day!

We started the morning with the Fast & the Furriest 5K Turkey Trot that supports the local humane society.  If you've been following me since the beginning you may remember that last year this was my very first 5K!  Looking at those pictures makes me feel a whole lot better about my lack of motivation lately, I've definitely come a long way!  Anyway, just like last year, it was freezing!  The building where registration is held blocks the sun at that time of morning so we were all standing in the shade waiting to get our numbers.
The line was super long, I guess they weren't anticipating such a big turnout!  The start time actually got pushed back almost a 1/2 hour so that they could get everyone registered.  As soon as we had our numbers we found a spot in the sun and entertained ourselves taking photos.
It was Rob's first time actually running a 5K!  Can you believe it?  After all the races he's come to, taken pictures at & cheered us on, this was his first time actually running.  It was a good thing my mom came to cheer us on so I could saddle her with my camera & his photographer duties.  Apparently while we were all busting our butts Shaggy & Kyah were enjoying some time on the beach.
It was definitely not one of my better races.  I rolled my ankle right off the start line and wasn't sure I'd be able to run at all.  Luckily I was able to shake it off but I just couldn't get my body into a good rhythm the whole time.  I was trying to push for a sub 30 minute race by increasing my breathing but that backfired and I ended up wheezing and panting the whole way back.  I don't have any more races booked until April so maybe I can get my speed up by then...

The worst part of the entire event was that there was a line to enter the chute!  When I finally got to the finish I had to stop and wait in line to have my time taken which means that my official time is going to be much longer then when I actually finished.  I have never seen anything like it.  If they don't fix all of their organizational issues I have a feeling they're going to lose a lot of people next year.
After the race had our 2nd annual after run breakfast at Towne & Country.  I ordered egg whites, ham, tomato and cheese on a kaiser roll.
On the way home I asked Joe if he was excited to decorate the house for the holidays after dinner and was met with a less then enthusiastic response.  Apparently the piles of my too big clothing in our computer room were bothering him and he didn't want to bring more things out of the attic when there was already so much crap laying around.  I can't blame him.  The issue is that I don't go into that room very often and I'm very much an out of sight out of mind kind of girl.  Once Joe voiced his frustrations I was more then happy to clean it all up.  Although he probably wished he hadn't said anything when he saw the amount of stuff that needed to be put in the attic!
Once I had finished boxing up all my crap it was time to get down to business.  We offered to bring the mashed potatoes to Joe's parent's house for dinner and we were running out of time to make them.  Thankfully a lot of blogs have been featuring healthy versions of Thanksgiving favorites so we had a bunch of great recipes to choose from.  We went with the skinny garlic mashed potatoes from SkinnyCrockPot.com.
Once the potatoes were ready and we were cleaned up it was time to head to Joe's parent's house.  We enjoyed a couple of appetizers and watched Janey's wedding slide show while we waited for the turkey to finish cooking.
Before long it was time for dinner.  We had a small group this year, only 7 people, but it was nice because everyone was part of every conversation.  I was also extremely proud of myself because I didn't go overboard, I only tried about a 1/2 cup of everything including our delicious mashed potatoes and didn't go back for seconds.  The potatoes turned out really great so I'm excited to make this my go to recipe.
I also made my rice cooker cake for dessert which was a big hit and we somehow managed to get home without any!  I don't mind taking turkey leftovers but dessert is just too tempting.
I had plans to meet Shana & Kelli for some black Friday shopping at midnight so I tried to take a little nap on the couch when we got home from dinner.  I am not a good napper so I think I managed maybe a half hour of sleep before it was time to hit the road.  We met up outside Target at 11:30pm and were probably a solid 100 yards from the front door.
As we waited for the doors to open at midnight the staff came around with Luna Energy Bars in chocolate peppermint.  We were all still full from our Thanksgiving dinners so we packed them away for later and did our best to stay warm.

4 day weekend!

Do you want to hear about how I'm behind again?  Didn't think so.  I'm thinking about changing things up and having certain days that I talk about certain topics.  Like I could try Motivation Monday, Tip Tuesday, What I Ate Wednesday, Three Things Thursday, Five for Friday, Style Saturday, Sunday Schedule; this way I would have a basic guideline of what I'm writing without having to recap my whole day everyday.  Although I can think of lots of Wednesday options and very few of the other days...  I'm going to wrap up last week then give it a try this week!  Wish me luck!

So way back to last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving.  I started the day with two slices of cinnamon bread with some low fat cream cheese and packed my leftover sandwich from the previous weekend for lunch.
Work was pretty quiet, a lot of people had taken the day off to start the holiday a little early and those who were in the office all seemed to be leaving early.  By 4:30 there were only 3 people left in my office so the managers decided we should close up 15 minutes early, always a nice surprise!

Pretty much as soon as I walked in the door Joe & I turned around and headed back out.  We had another date night planned.  We were going to have dinner at Red Robin with a gift card Joe earned at work.
I looked over the menu in hopes of finding something appropriate to eat but it's really hard there!  I finally settled on a cheeseburger and garlic parmesan fries after Joe gave me a pep talk about splurging every once in a while...although I seem to splurge more then I should lately...we'll pretend that isn't happening for the evening.
After dinner we headed to the movie theater to meet Kat & Mark to see The Muppets.  Joe LOVES the muppets and had been talking about seeing the movie for weeks.  Apparently Kat shares his love of the muppets so they were excited to join us.  Of course it wouldn't be a trip to the movie theater if Joe didn't play video games.  I wish I could have gotten a picture when this little boy was watching him in awe.
The movie was really cute.  I'm sure it's not everyone's taste but it was funny without being crude or too childish.  Sort of like Shrek, technically it's for kids but there are enough adult jokes to keep parents entertained.

the power to shut down Facebook

I have so many random things to say about Tuesday so you'll have to forgive me if I jump around.  I wasn't really feeling any of the food in our refrigerator for breakfast so I decided to stop somewhere on the way to work.  I packed a lunch (honey crisp apple, carrot sticks, mango greek yogurt and mini pretzels) and headed out the door a little earlier then usual.  I debated between Manhattan Bagel (high calorie, long wait), Dunkin Donuts (super long wait) and Burger King (high calorie) as I drove.  As I got closer to work I knew I was running out of time to make a decision then I remembered, I was taking spin that afternoon, I would totally be able to burn off a big breakfast.  Burger King it is!  I went with two cheesy bacon wrappers, very possibly my all time favorite fast food breakfast item.
When I got to work and opened up my calendar I was super excited to see that Joe had finally gotten his December schedule!  Do you have any idea how hard it is to plan holiday events when you have no clue when your significant other is available?  Especially now that they've moved him to the store in the mall; he can be scheduled any time between 7am and 11pm plus he only gets 1 day off most weeks.  I immediately got to work contacting friends and family to set up dinners and what not.  The most exciting event being my dad's birthday dinner in Philly at Fogo de Chao.

While dinner will definitely be a good time I'm more excited for what we'll be doing before dinner.  A week or so ago Joe mentioned going up to Steven Singer to look at engagement rings!  Apparently they gear their service to make the guys feel as comfortable as possible.  A sale person gives you a beer/wine to calm the nerves then finds out how much Joe is comfortable spending without letting me know the actual number.  Then they will show us settings and diamonds within our price range and take notes on our preferences.  We decided that since my dad wanted to have dinner in Philly for his birthday it made sense to just drive up a little early and check it out.  I know we won't be buying anything while we're there but it definitely makes it all a little more real.

You'll have to forgive my friend's spelling, I'm sure she was just overly excited for me but I couldn't not include her response to the increasing possibility of Joe and I getting married.
I was heading to the gym alone again on Tuesday.  I had asked my boss if it would be alright for me to come in a 1/2 hour early so I could leave a 1/2 hour early to make sure I had a bike for class.  Well wouldn't you know, getting there at 4:45 got me the first spot on the list!  In fact I was so early that I had to ask for them to take the list out.  I'll definitely have to remember to bring my Kindle in the future, it's hard to entertain yourself for a 1/2 hour at a gym without actually exercising.  The class was pretty good, it was a new ride called The Age of Aquarius that featured music from 1968.  The instructor joked with me and an older gentleman in class about knowing the music, in the end he knew them all and I only recognized 8 out of 14, not bad considering I was born 13 years after 1968.
Joe got home before me and started on dinner.  He's trying to earn a free turkey from ShopRite so he wanted to clear out some space in the freezer.  Our dinner featured mini cheeseburgers!
I really love when we both get home early enough to hang out all evening.  I kept looking at the clock and being surprised that it wasn't time for bed yet.  Although that does leave more time for snacking, I even enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate in my awesome rooster mug.
I haven't gotten my steps in almost a week but I've decided that if I get a good workout in I'm not stressing about the steps.  It's dark so early now and it's getting colder so walking outside isn't always an option anymore, I just need to be sure I'm being active.

fail blogger

Yeah I am totally a blog failure.  I did not take one picture yesterday.  Well that's not true, Joe took my outfit picture but I have to save that for Friday.  Seriously, I can't believe I didn't take any pictures of anything.  I think it's because the camera on my phone sucks so badly that it's more hassle then it's worth because I have to take at least 3 shots to make sure I have one decent one.  Hopefully when I get an iPhone that will be all but a distant memory.  Since there are no pretty pictures to look at I will keep this brief so as not to bore you all to death.

Breakfast was my last Thomas' pumpkin spice bagel with low fat cream cheese.

Lunch was a honey crisp apple, a pineapple greek yogurt, mini pretzels and a tangerine that I stole from Nicole since we're running low on fruit options at our house.

I went to the gym after work.  By myself!  Yay me!  I took Cardio Blast/Abs at the gym.  It was basically a 1/2 hour step class followed by a 1/2 hour of light lifting with hand weights.  I was plenty sweaty when I left but didn't think it was too difficult.  Well today my abs are screaming.  Job well done LifeCenter.

Dinner was some leftover ham and cabbage.

Joe worked until 9pm so I was on the couch in front of the tv most of the evening.  I got some blogging done and watched a bunch of "crap shows."  Joe stopped home for just a few minutes before heading back out to the gym, I tried to stay awake but kept dozing off in front of Gossip Girl so I headed upstairs.  I vaguely remember a bit of conversation when he came to bed but I was pretty much dead to the world by 10:30.

they're practically giving it away

I woke up a little hungover on Sunday.  That's what 3 glasses of wine will do to you!  Lucky for me we both overslept so Joe didn't have time to convince me to go for a run.  That would have been terrible!  I had plans to go outlet shopping with my sister later that morning so I took a quick shower, ate a pumpkin bagel with low fat cream cheese and popped a couple of Excedrin before heading out the door.  I was a super nice sister and drove to Brigantine to pick Shana up even though it was out of the way...

The outlets were having some pretty great sales.  My new favorite place on earth, Under Armor, was offering an additional 20% off clearance items!  You better believe I picked up some more workout gear!
Old Navy is doing an entire week of fabulous sales leading up to black Friday.  Sunday's special was 75% off adult sweaters, that made most of them under $10 each!  As you can see people were getting a little out of control so once we found the sizes we were looking for it was time to get out of there.
We hit about four stores in the three hours we were there.  We were both getting hungry and it was way past lunch time so we stopped for lunch on the way back to Shana's house.
The restaurant gives a small order of bruschetta while you look over the menu.  Pretty fancy for what's basically a pizza place.
Shana ordered two slices of pizza, one sausage and one plain.  I had eaten enough pizza the night before so I went with a panini, the Couzin Petey (roasted turkey breast paired with spinach & sun dried tomatoes, provolone, finished with basil mayo).  It was delicious, but huge!  I only ate half and that was more then enough.
I spent the rest of the afternoon on the couch watching tv and started uploading pictures for the last couple of blogs.  All of a sudden there were fire engines and cars blowing their horns driving slowly down my street, I went outside to check it out (along with all of my neighbors).  It turns out the local pee wee football team won their championship so they were celebrating.  Crazy people, I thought there was an accident or something!  Joe came home shortly thereafter and then John & Lou/Nicole/Jack came over to watch the Flyer's game.  We all hung out for a couple of hours but when Nicole left with Jack I headed upstairs to do some laundry and fell asleep the minute my head hit the pillow.
