11/25 - Day 4

Yesterday was Thanksgiving, which means that today was black Friday and I have some ridiculous stories in store for you guys tomorrow.  But first let me talk about my 5K & the holiday we celebrated.

My friend Angela has been trying to convince me to run the entire time I've known her, which is about a year (she has a pretty inspiring weight loss story herself, you can check her health conscience blog over at sparkpeople).  One day I finally realized that every person I know that has lost a significant  amount of weight was running.  It was time to suck it up and hit the bike path.  We started the couch to 5K program in September with plans to finish in time to do a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving.

I think my sister was excited I was taking this on too.  She's been a runner since high school and my mantra was always "I only run if chased."  Now we would have something new to do together.  With the help of Joe, Amanda & Angela I managed to complete the 9 week program the Tuesday before the 5K.  I have to admit it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be & I'm even considering doing a 10K in the future.  But enough of my rambling here are the pictures...
Me & Angela
My awesome friends that signed up to come out and run with me!  My sister & her husband Bill, my boyfriend Joe, long time friends Edra, Angela, plus Angela's friend Callista who ran the race with hopes of qualifying for the DC 1/2 marathon (she did!)

Here's where I write about how extremely awesome my sister was during the race...she offered to run the entire 3.1 miles at my pace so I wouldn't get discouraged even though the my pace is about a minute slower per mile then hers.  She kept me motivated the whole time, we talked and discussed strategy the whole way up & down the boardwalk.  We decided which people we were going to beat & she kept me from speeding up too much and wearing myself out.  Most importantly, she kept track of our time so we'd be sure I beat my goal of 38 minutes.  At the end of the race when we were in sight of the finish line she let me know that if I ran as fast as I could I would be able to beat my goal by 3 whole minutes!  I came in at 34:55!
On your mark, get set, go!
It's not a Turkey Trot without a turkey!
Angela comes in!
Here comes Joe!
See Shana telling me to go faster?!?!

It was crazy!  Below is a picture of me grinning like a lunatic in my official participant long sleeve t-shirt.

Now that I've got all of that out...here's my food.  I wanted something in my stomach before the race but nothing too heavy.  I split one of my english muffins with peanut & banana with Joe = 160 calories.
After the race all 9 of us (my mom came out to cheer us on, Angela's husband was our official photographer & Edra's boyfriend came) went out to breakfast at Towne & Country.  I had my standard ham & swiss omlette with sliced tomato and rye toast = 710 calories.
We were so stuffed from breakfast (and exhausted from the race) that we didn't feel like eating again before we went to Joe's parent's house for Thanksgiving dinner.  My dad & Judy came to dinner as well, it was really nice to have some of my family around.  There were a couple of different appetizers, I only hate 1 deviled egg & 7 crackers (5 with the crab dip & 2 with cheese) =  290 calories.

Pretty soon it was time for the main event.  I actually toyed with the idea of bringing my 1/2 cup measuring cup so I would be positive of how much I ate.  Joe wasn't extremely fond of that idea.  Here's the picture of my plate, 1 biscuit + 1/2 cup stuffing + 1/2 cup corn pudding + 1/2 cup green bean casserole + 1/2 cup mashed potato + 1/2 sweet potato + 3 slices of white meat turkey + 3 tbsp gravy + 1 glass of white wine = 909 calories.
I'm not going to lie I really had to muscle through this food.  I normally don't have any problem finishing but this year it just wasn't happening.  I'm looking at that as a good thing.

Last, but certainly not least, for dessert my dad brought a chocolate strawberry shortcake.  Joe & I split the piece below = 117 calories.
Daily wrap up:
1. completed 35 fitness minutes = 5K
2. 4 servings of fruits/veggies
3. 64 ounces of water...check - I really learned the importance of my water this day.  I had a terrible headache by 2pm because I'd only had 2 glasses of water.  Once I finished 2 more I felt much better.
4. Tracking: 2190 calories burned - 2187 calories eaten = total 3 calories burned...lol
5. I didn't do anything especially relaxing.
6. No weigh in until Friday.

  1. I love blogs with pictures!!! Haha! You did amazing on your 5K! I can't believe you killed your time by 3 minutes! Actually I can because we ran that wonderful 11 min/mile run but still I'm just so excited for you!

The food looks so yummy. I love that you brought your measuring cup! I would have been too shy but I'm getting pretty good at eyeballing servings. But go you for being sure!
