Five for Friday ~ 4/13/12

1. You were really excited to see the Easter bunny came (I'm never the one to surprise you).

2. You agreed to walking to your parent's house for Easter dinner so we could burn some extra calories.

3. You ask all technical questions in photographer meetings.

4. You made sure to come downstairs before I left for work so we could hang out a little since our schedules weren't great this week.

5. You weren't offended when I fell asleep before you came upstairs 2 days in a row.

We have a venue!

We've picked a venue!  No contracts have been signed yet, but the date is reserved and I've cancelled all of our other visits!  Joe & I will be getting married at the Sheraton Atlantic City!
My senior prom was actually at the Sheraton, though I don't remember a lot of it, lots of drama with my high school boyfriend overshadows the dancing and whatnot.  Anyway, the Sheraton was always on my short list of venues to look at because it has pretty much everything we're looking for.

1.  We wanted to have the wedding at a hotel or at a venue with a hotel very close by (like within walking distance in the middle of winter).  I didn't feel right inviting people to an event on NYE, giving them free drinks for 5+ hours and then just sending them out onto the roads at 2am.

2.  A modern look.  Because the wedding is on NYE I felt like the ever popular vintage/cutesy theme wouldn't work, plus it's not really our style.  A lot of the venues we looked at a definite vibe (nautical, old world) and none of them were modern.

3. A fair price.  We went into planning with the knowledge that this could be expensive and we might need to change our date, it is NYE after all.  My biggest concern was that we book a place that wasn't price gouging us just because it's a "holiday," the Sheraton is not.  As far as I can tell we are getting a standard wedding package from them with no additional taxes & fees based around the date.

Here is a basic rundown of how our wedding will go:

Our guests will pull into the driveway in front of the building and receive free valet parking.  Upon entering the lobby they can check in for the evening ($199 a night) or proceed upstairs for the ceremony.  Across from the concierge is a gift shop where they can pick up Atlantic City nick knacks or toiletries they may have forgotten in their overnight bag.  Just beyond the lobby they will be greeted by the atrium filled with Miss America memorabilia and the grand staircase.
I've had a hard time finding pictures of weddings at our venue, I keep coming across the same two couples.  Maybe I'll see if our planner and direct me toward some more.  Here are some shots of one happy couple taking advantage of the beautiful architecture.
At the top of the stairs is a bar that will be open after the ceremony, during cocktail hour.
While are guest are arriving Joe & I will be in the VIP suite with our bridal party.  The suite is included at no charge with our package.  The ladies and I will get ready there and then I'm assuming after the first look the boys will join us until the ceremony starts.
The pictures really don't do it justice.  When you enter there is a bathroom, dining room & living room that are easily the size on our entire downstairs then through double doors to the right is the master bedroom and bath that are also enormous.
The ceremony will take place in the smallest ballroom.  Here are some pictures I found of a ceremony at the Sheraton.
I'm thinking of something similar to the picture below but not as woodsy, lots of greenery and candled with few or no flowers.  I've heard you can rent trees from a nursery...
Cocktail hour will be held in the Boulevards restaurant that overlooks Atlantic City.  The view during the day is beautiful so I can only imagine what it will look like all lit up at night!
They pull out all of the regular tables and chairs and add cocktail rounds.  I'm thinking of decorating them with martini glasses full of beads and disco balls then adding sparkly Ls, Js and votives.
After cocktail hour guests will be shown the main ballroom.  There are two that we can choose between depending on how many guests we end up with.  But they both look basically the same.
I don't want to compete with the decor in the ballroom so the plan is to keep the decorations in basic colors (black, ivory, champagne, silver) and include lots of glitter!  My flower budget is super small so I'm planning to stay with babies breath and carnations and if the price is right maybe even DIY everything except my bouquet.
Obviously these are all just pipe dreams right now, I have no idea if I'll be able to recreate any of it, if it will work together or what the cost will be.  But keep your fingers crossed for me and I'll keep you all in the loop as the projects unfold!

An extra bonus of using the venue we are is that there is a bar right next door!  I have been assured that the Tun Tavern will be open after 1pm when the reception ends and we can even set up specials for our guests!

Now that we have a venue the next stop is save the dates!  Well that and interviewing photographers and DJs...

Kat's Shower

Last Saturday, March 31st, Shana & I drove to Coatesville, PA to celebrate Kat's bridal shower.  MapQuest said it would take 2+ hours to get there so I was up bright and early to get a manicure before meeting Shana around 10am.  Unfortunately my manicure took longer then planned & Quynh told me my outfit wasn't dressy enough so I ended up meeting Shana closer to 11 then 10, whoops!  Luckily it didn't take nearly as long as anticipated and we were the first guests to arrive!
The shower was very simple, we didn't play any games or anything but the food was delicious!  We spent the first hour or two chit chatting with Kat's family & friends from PA before grabbing a plate for a late lunch.  I wish I had taken pictures of the food!  There was this salad with strawberries, cheese & nuts that was awesome!  There was also a hoagie dip that was yummy.  It's the 2nd time I've had it at a party recently; must be an up & comer on the appetizer circuit, guess I'm going to have to learn to make it.

Soon it was time for gifts!  Kat & Mark got an adorable set of plastic mason jar glasses for using in the yard this summer.  I'm excited to try them out!
Her mother-in-law to be put together an awesome bag full of items they can use on their 3 week European honeymoon (I know, I'm jealous too).  And her grandmother made this beautiful blanket that she promptly modeled for us.
Shana put together a basket with an ice bucket, bottle opener & a few bottles of wine that Kat was very excited about.  Next she modeled her new luggage for the honeymoon!
Once the gifts we open and the cake was eaten it was time to relax.  I swear Shana & I did not wear the same outfit.  She is actually wearing a dress with leggings and I have on a top and black pants but the prints are very similar.
Towards the end of the afternoon the bridal party got together for some pictures, I was shocked by how many people there were.  I counted everyone and realized she only has 1 more bridesmaid then I do...oops!  Imagine if I would have asked all 10 like I wanted to!!

What to blog about?

I feel really terrible about my lack of blogging this week.  I just haven't been sure what to write about.

All we've been doing lately is visiting venues trying to find the perfect place at the perfect price for our wedding.  I think we finally found a place but I'm waiting for their per head price in writing before we commit and can stop looking everywhere else.

Now, I could blog about each of these venues and their pros & cons but I don't think I want to turn this blog into all wedding all the time.  I'll probably share our final choice once it's settled but for now I really don't want to ramble on about everywhere we aren't going.

While all of these wedding trips are definitely fun, they take away the time I used to use to do everything else.

I can't write about my workouts because there haven't been any.  Between driving all over South Jersey checking out venues, working our regular jobs, thirty-one shows and celebrating our engagement with friends it's all I can do to get a good night's sleep.  Luckily I've managed to keep my eating under control though, I lost 2lbs this week!  Things are looking better for next week as well.  I'm going to boot camp tonight at the gym, Joe and I are planning 1 or 2 runs this weekend; I have 4 workouts scheduled for next week and the mud run (we are also visiting a venue & meeting with two photographers)!

I'm going to post a couple of quick ones about last weekends festivities soon too, better late then never, right?!?!

Five for Friday ~ 4/6/12

1. You ran 5.8 miles of the April Fool's Day race with me.

2. You made shrimp pizza for dinner before a venue visit so we wouldn't have to eat out.

3. You talked to me my entire drive home because I was tired.

4. You want to buy me a new bikini for summer.

5. You want to set up an egg hunt for Jack on Sunday.

March Wrap Up - April Goals

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  I just looked at my goal spreadsheet for March and I haven't filled it out since 3/14.

Needless to say I cannot report on how I did last month.

I'm also not making any goals for April because things are so crazy that I would just be setting myself up for failure.  I literally have something booked every single day in April except for Wednesday the 18th.  Seriously, I have venue visits, doctor appointments, dinners with friends, workouts, thirty-one shows, races, work events and even jury duty this month!

Lucky for all of you it means I'm going to have a lot to write about!

101 in 1001 - update

I can't believe we're already a month into this already!  Someone asked how it was going the other day and I had to be honest, I hadn't thought about it in the slightest...oops!  I just went through the list and pulled the goals we should be working on regularly...

13.   Meal plan every Sunday.  We have not meal planned at all.  Which means we'll be putting $10 in the account for this one.  I think is was probably a little too lofty to think we could meal plan each Sunday for almost 3 years...oh well, maybe we'll get on it in April (but not the first week, since we didn't meal plan yesterday).

14.   Try at least two new recipes a month. (2/66)  I was a little nervous about this until I started looking back through March's posts, turn out I made Easy Garlic Chicken & Pasta with Roasted Brussel Sprouts and Red Onion this month!

39.   Dress up and go out once a month. (1/33)  We had our fancy night out in Philadelphia at Le Bec-Fin!

40.   Have a double-date with friends once every other month. (1/16)  Again I was nervous that we hadn't done this but luckily we're social butterflies and had a sushi date with Carol & Chris!

41.   Get engaged.  Wahoo!!

91.   Run 1001 miles.  I ran 28 miles in March.
